Cylinder Head Replacement - Recommended Steps
We recommend the following must be inspected and/or replaced:
- AIR FILTERING SYSTEM: All air drawn must be filtered to guard against dirt entering the engine causing excessive valve wear. Improper breather cap ventilation will cause oil leaks and high oil consumption. Positive Crankcase Ventilation (P.C.V.) valves should be replaced.
- FUEL SYSTEM: Carburetor, fuel pump, and fuel lines should be reconditioned or replaced. A faulty fuel pump will allow gasoline to enter the crankcase causing oil dilution. Faulty fuel pump and/or restricted fuel lines will cause low fuel pressure resulting in lean mixture which may lead to detonation or preignition. A faulty or dirty carburetor will operate but may lead to detonation or preignition.
- COOLING SYSTEM: Water pump, belts, thermostat, hoses, heater, dirty and clogged radiator results in overheating, causing warped valves or seats, cracked block or cylinder heads. The radiator should be rodded and boiled. Install new thermostat, check or replace water pump, hoses, and belts. A leaky water pump will cause poor water circulation resulting in overheating. Fill radiator with NEW coolant mixture. Check electric fan and sending unit.
- ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: Wiring, coil, plugs, condensor should be replaced. Battery and distributor should be checked and/or replaced.
- GAUGES: All gauges should be in working order.
- LUBRICATING SYSTEM: The following should be done BEFORE starting your engine. a. Oil filter base must be cleaned. b. Presoak new oil filter cartridge in new oil. c. Prime the oil pump and oil galleries. d. Make sure oil pump shaft turns freely. e. Check all oil fittings and lines. f. Install new oil pick-up line and screen. g. Engine oil must be changed after 100 miles of highway service or 3 hours of commercial service.
- OTHER IMPORTANT PROCEDURES: Replace head bolts, clean and retap bolt holes in block. Check block surface for warpage. Clean and bleed hydraulic lifters, or replace. Do not fit radiator cap until water is circulating, to prevent system from becoming air locked.
After Starting:
- Check oil pressure immediately. Just a few seconds of running without oil pressure will ruin an engine.
- Check timing. Incorrect timing can result in burned pistons, cracked heads, burned valves.
- Check coolant levels.
